A Response To “U.S. Students Make Scant Geography Progress”
Our problem, which I have seen proven in studies, can in part be linked to the extended summer break up advice. While I loved this break as a child, I believe it does more harm than good. It has been proven that students have a loss of abilities over this break causing the first month or so of a new school year being devoted to reviewing topics covered in the previous year. Also, there are countries that have developed a type of specialization in schools. At the end of elementary school, assess students for the purpose of discerning their strong subjects (math, science, etc.) From here, students can be guided through the rest of their education to cater towards their strong suits and most likely their chosen profession. This will lead to students better prepared for their major once they enter college and a more successful workforce. I’m not saying once a student leaves elementary school to throw out things such as english or literature if they are more proficient in math, but focus greater on the subjects they’ll be most likely to use in life.
