I Wonder How Great it Really Was
The first time I heard that the old general stores used to be owned and operated by families and have living quarters right above them, I thought it was wonderful. However, the more that I think about it, the more that I wonder how great it really was, especially for the customers. The goods were often sold in large vats, customers were sometimes waited on by small children, and I can imagine that the place wasn’t always completely clean. No wonder there was so much disease back then. I’ll take our modern facilities, with their meticulous attention to food service sanitation, over that kind of an environment any day.
