Bobby Moore and Gordon Banks Star in One of Games of the Century

Although it seems odd for a defeat to be remembered as one of the most memorable England matches, the Three Lions’ encounter with one of the greatest Brazil teams of all time during the 1970 World Cup certainly lived up to its billing. Fans remember Gordon Banks’ jaw-dropping save from Pele’s goal-bound header was both so spectacular that it rendered fans speechless and is now commonly referred to as the ‘save of the century’. The match is also remembered for captain Bobby Moore’s perfectly-timed tackles, including one phenomenal challenge on Jairzinho as the Brazilian winger burst into the penalty area. Despite the heroics of Moore and Banks, England eventually lost the game 1-0, and Brazil went on to win the World Cup for the third time.
